A jig is a lure consisting of a bait of hair or plastic, and a jig head that functions as a weight. Jigs are often fitted with a single hook, but sometimes also with a trident hook on the belly which can be removed.

Jigs are most often used in freshwater or brackish water when fishing for pikeperch, pike and perch. However, jigs can also be used for saltwater fish such as coalfish, halibut and cod.
