Repaint Your Fence - how to do it

A freshly painted fence that breaks up the summer greenery is hard to beat. Restoring an old fence is also a perfect outdoor project for the summer holidays. If you do the groundwork right, the painting will be easy and the result will be better. In addition, it will be a longer time before you need to repaint the fence next time.

Remove algae and old paint

Start by washing the fence with an exterior cleaner, which you apply using a brush or a sponge. Work the surface until all dirt is gone, then rinse with plenty of water. For the new paint to adhere as well as possible, the old paint needs to be scraped off. The wood surfaces don’t need to look brand new; the important thing is that you remove any paint that has come loose from the wood. With a paint scraper, you can easily remove loose paint flakes and unevenness.

Also take the opportunity to sand down sharp edges and hammer in nails thar are sticking out of the wood. Then sweep up all the paint you have scraped off, otherwise the old paint flakes may blow up from a gust of wind and stick to your newly painted surfaces.

Protect the wood with primer oil

Now that the preparatory work is done, it’s time to oil the fence with primer oil to protect the wood from moisture. Apply the oil liberally until the wood is saturated. Pay particular attention to end grains, joints, and cracks where the wood can easily absorb moisture.

Time to paint

Once the oil has dried, it’s time to prime. Use an outdoor primer that you apply with a roller on the large surfaces and with a smaller brush on areas that are a little more difficult to reach. Let the primer dry and then apply another coat of primer.

Finally, it’s time to apply the paint you have chosen! Also apply two coats of the paint. Remember not to paint in direct sunlight. This can cause the paint to dry too quickly, which will affect the end result.
