Garden pumps – a helping hand in the garden and home

A garden pump can be an effective and helpful tool when you need to remove water or transport it from one place to another, such as when emptying a pool, watering the vegetable garden, or perhaps even saving a basement from flooding.

Garden pump – flexible irrigation pump with a wide range of uses

A garden pump can be used for a variety of things. such as watering, draining and emptying water containers, transporting water from a well, for example, or even emptying pools.

Garden pumps, also called irrigation pumps, can be used virtually all year round. They are easy to maintain, and they pump water with good pressure. The pumps are easy to start and shut down, as well as handle and transport. They have strong suction power and pressure performance, which makes them effective and easy to use in the home and garden.

Frost-sensitive garden pumps

Keep in mind that your water pump must be frost-free all year round, regardless of whether it is used or not, since it is very sensitive to frost.

Different types of garden pumps

Automatic pump

An automatic pump is placed above the water and requires a suction system and pressure hose. Automatic pumps are mainly used for supplying water to cottages or gardens, but not as drinking water. The automatic pump starts and shuts off automatically when the water tap is opened or closed.

Submersible pump

A submersible pump is submerged in the water and only needs a pressure hose to transport water. After lowering the pump into the water and the float rise up, the pump activates and the water begins to pump. A submersible pump can be used as a temporary pump when you need to transport large amounts of water, such as in the event of a flood.

Petrol-powered water pump

A petrol-powered water pump is placed above the water and requires a suction hose and pressure hose to transport water. The pump works in the same way as a garden pump, but with significantly higher capacity. It is therefore perfect for transporting large volumes of water from, for example, a lake.

What should I consider when choosing and using a garden pump?

1. Choose the right type of garden pump

There are variety of pumps to choose from. The pump size you will need is determined by numerous factors, such as the amount of watering you want to do and, for example, the depth of the water (from a well) to be pumped.

On our product pages you can read more and find out which garden pump will suit your purpose.

2. Choose the right flow rate

The flow rate is indicated by either the number of litres per minute or the number of litres per hour the water pump is able to pump.

The flow rate will also affect the price of the pump. If the pump will be used to repeatedly fill large volumes, it is advantageous if the pump has a higher flow rate, but for just watering your lawn or tomatoes, a smaller flow rate is sufficient.

3. Pumping water from a well?

If you are looking for a pump that will help transport water from a well, it is important to measure the depth of the well. All wells have different depths, and it is therefore very important to measure and check the conditions in your garden.

4. Garden pump maintenance and storage

As mentioned, garden pumps can be used most of the year and like all other machines, it needs regular maintenance. The pump contains few moving parts and can therefore be considered quite simple to maintain.

During the winter, the pump should be removed from the well and stored in a heated area. This will prevent the pump or it components from freezing when the temperature drops. During this period, you should also check the condition of your pump and service it as required.

It’s important to keep in mind that each pump is unique and therefore you should always follow the instructions accompanying the pump upon purchase. The manuals and other important documents for each pump sold at Biltema can be found on the respective pump’s product page under ‘Manuals and Documents’. This ensures that you are aware of everything relating to the areas of use, installation, and storage of the pump.
