Moving from home to-do list

Moving from home to-do list

Thousands of students move to student housing to start new studies, meet new friends and experience new things. It is natural to be excited about student life and have high expectations of what life in new housing will be like. But before you move from home to student housing, you need to be prepared for a big moving job. Read on for some tips on how to move out quickly so that you can start enjoying life as a student!

Plan your move early

The most valuable piece of advice is to not just improvise or postpone the move. Plan well in advance and set a final moving date so you have something to work towards. Doing so will ensure that the workload is more manageable and the transition more comfortable.
Once you have set a date and have a time frame in which to work, you should create a checklist (on a notepad or your phone) so that you don’t forget things along the way. Write everything down, point by point, so that you can check things off as you complete them. For example, start by getting rid of things you don’t need.

Sell, donate or throw away

Get rid of things that have been lying around for ages not being used. This will help you create space and you won’t have to take unnecessary stuff to your new housing. Sell furniture, clothing and other items online or donate things you don’t need to a charity shop. Keep in mind that storage space at your student housing may be limited, so only take what you know you will use.

Organise

Create a system for what you will take with you and pack things into moving boxes, then mark the contents of all boxes so you know what the boxes contain when you unpack at your student housing.
Use the colour coding system to label rooms, kitchens and bathrooms in different colours, which you also use on the boxes so that everyone who helps with the move knows where in the apartment the boxes belong.
Pack winter clothes and summer clothes separately to avoid having to spend time sorting the clothes you need right away from those you don’t. This will avoid unnecessary work later on.
Remember to use inserts if you will be packing glasses and cups into the moving boxes, and also use some corrugated cardboard and Kraft paper to be sure that everything will arrive safely.

During the move

Think about your back during the move. It is unnecessary to carry more than you need to. A moving dolly is a one-time investment of NOK 500 and can be used again and again. A folding moving dolly can be folded up so that it takes up less space in the storage room when not in use.
A tarpaulin and trailer canopy protect any furniture and equipment you move, so you can avoid unloading wet objects into your new apartment. Throw a moving blanket between the furniture to make sure you don’t scratch anything during the move.

Moving to-do list

  • Plan well in advance
  • Arrange with friends
  • Create a to-do list
  • Use colour codes
  • Buy a few things to make the job easier
  • Register at a new health clinic
  • Water, electricity, gas, heating
  • Check TV and internet
  • Keys for the postbox and storage room

There are probably many more things to keep in mind when moving, so create a to-do list specific to you.

We hope your move will go as smoothly as possible and enjoy your new place!
